Windows Vista (all versions)
STEP 1: Click the Start button.
STEP 2: Click the Control Panel button.
STEP 3: Double-click the "Network and Sharing Center" icon; if you do not see
this icon, then click the "Classic View" option on the left-hand menu.
STEP 4: Make sure that the option "File sharing" under "Sharing and Discovery"
is on. If it is off, click on the dimmed light next to "Off" and select the option "Turn on file sharing."
STEP 5: Ensure that the "Password protected sharing" option is turned on. It
is required that any files shared on the residential network be password protected.
STEP 6: Find the folder that you wish to share. Right-click on this folder and
select "Properties". Click on the "Sharing" tab, then the "Advanced Sharing..." button.
STEP 7: Select the "Share this folder" option. You may set the share name to
whatever you wish. Click on the "Permissions" button, and then "Add..." any accounts you wish to have access to this folder.
STEP 8: Under "Permissisions" you can select whether that person may have Full
Control of the files in a folder, Change the files, or only Read them.
STEP 9: Be sure to remove the "Everyone" group, as this would allow any person
on your network to access the files in this folder.
STEP 10: Click "Ok" to close the "Sharing" window, then "Ok" again to close
the "Properties" window. There will now be a small icon with people on it next to the folder indicating that it is now being
shared on the network.
Windows XP Professional
STEP 1:
Click the Start button.
STEP 2:
Click the Control Panel icon.
STEP 3:
Double-click "Folder Options"
icon; if you do no see this icon, then click the "Switch to Classic View" link
on the left-hand side of the window.
STEP 4:
Click the "View" tab.
STEP 5:
Scroll to the bottom of the list of advanced settings, and uncheck "Use Simple
File Sharing (Recommended)" and then click OK.
STEP 6:
Right click the shared folder and select "Sharing and Security".
STEP 7:
Click Permissions.
STEP 8:
Remove the "Everyone" group by
selecting the icon and then pushing the "Remove" button. Then click the
"Add" button to open the Select Users, Computers or Groups window.
STEP 9:
In the lower section of the
window, type the username of the person/people you wish to grant access.
STEP 10:
When all the users are
added, give the users ample permission by checking the permissions: full
control (ability to read, modify, or delete the files), change, read only (recommended).
STEP 11:
Click OK to close the
Permissions window.
STEP 12:
Click OK to close the
Properties window. After the window closes, a little hand will appear
under the folder indicating that it is shared.
Windows XP Home
You are unable to
password protect shared folders in Windows XP Home Edition. Therefore, we
must advise against sharing folders or files, as it will violate the
ResNet Rules of Use Policy.
Mac OS X
STEP 1: Open the System Preferences from the Apple menu.
STEP 2: Click on Sharing.
STEP 3: Turn on "Personal File Sharing". If you wish to share
files with a Windows computer, turn on "Windows File Sharing" as well. (Note that under "Windows File Sharing"
you will see an address to use when connecting from a Windows computer.)
STEP 4: By default you can access your files from another computer
using your own username and password. To enable other users to access these files you must create ans account for them
and enable their account in the folder options.
STEP 5: In the System Preferences, select Accounts and create an
account for whomever you wish to be able to access files on your computer.
STEP 6: Right-click (or ctrl-click, if using a single-button
mouse) on the folder that you wish to share and select Get Info. Go to "Ownership & Permissions" and "Details". Set the
Group to the account you created, and set "Access" to "Read & Write". You may need to click on the small lock next to Owner
in order to make these changes.
STEP 7: The folder and its contents may now be accessed remotely.
