Information for New and Prospective Students

Are you thinking about attending the University of Puget Sound in the fall, but would like to know more about the role of technology on campus? Or have you decided that UPS is the school for you, and would like an idea of what to expect when you arrive? Then this is the place to start!

To get a general overview of ResNet and the services we offer, check out our About page. For answers to a particular questions, visit our Frequently Asked Questions page. Below are a number of questions commonly asked by new students. If you have any questions or concerns that are not addressed here, please feel free to contact us at any time. We are dedicated to ensuring that each of our students feels confident in the technological environment here at UPS.

  • How will I use technology while I attend the University of Puget Sound?

For the most part, you can expect to use technology as much or as little as you desire here at UPS. While almost any class will require you to submit work written in a word-processor, this can be done on any of the University-owned lab computers. Similarly, the University supplies printers in most of its labs. For more information on the computer labs on campus, visit our Labs page. Some classes, mainly those offered in the Science and Math departments, will require the use of specialized software, all of which are avaliable on any lab computer. Furthermore, many classes utilize a Blackboard online interface to make assignments accessible from anywhere with an internet connection.

  • Should I buy a computer or use the computers provided on campus?

As mentioned above, the University supplies its students with all the technological resources which may be required during the course of their time here. However, most of our students find it useful to own personal computers, for both school-related and non school-related activities. This is due to the fact that owning your own computer, especially a laptop, provides a far more flexible environment for study. Before purchasing a new computer, please take a look at our Purchase Recommendations page.

  • Can I find a computer at 2:00 am if I need one?

The Office of Information Services provides multiple general access and departmental labs to the campus community. All labs are open during reasonable hours and any general access lab can be used 24 hours a day, provided you contact the University's Security Services to be admitted. You can see what labs are available on campus on our computing labs page. ResNet also provides and maintains a residential computer lab in each dormitory that is open to students living in that building at any time. However, ResNet does not supply paper for printing in those labs.

  • Are there wireless connections available on campus?

The Office of Information Systems provides wireless connections in all academic buildings on campus. Wireless is also available in select dorms. Check out our wireless page for details.

  • Is a technology fee charged in addition to tuition?

The University includes all technology costs in general tuition. There are no extra fees charged to students.

  • Is technology training available?

The Office of Information Services provides a number of technology training opportunities to incoming students during the beginning of the Fall semester. Additionally, ResNet is more than happy to offer individual training on specific issues to students at any point during the academic year.
