What Devices work on the Network?

The following devices are automatically recognized and supported on the network:

  • Computers running Windows XP or more recent Windows operating systems
  • Computers running Macintosh OSX 10.3.9 and above
  • Computers running Linux
  • Gaming consoles like the xbox360, ps3, and Wii using a wired network connection
  • iPhones and certain other WiFi enabled portable devices such as Nintendo DS and Sony PSP portable game consoles.
Questions? Want to connect a device not on the list? Doing so may be possible. Contact us.

Considering purchasing a new computer for use on our network? Please see our page for computer recommendations and discounts.

Do I need special equipment?

Besides a network cable? Nothing.  Virtually all computers made in the last ten years include a "Network Interface Card" or "NIC" that allows you to connect to a high speed network using an ethernet cable. If you want to connect through the wired network you will need to provide your own ethernet cable. They are available for purchase in the University Bookstore.

Beginning the 09-10 school year, all residences will be equipped with wireless access. Most laptops made in the last ten years include a wireless card. While we have state of the art "802.11n" wireless routers, they are still  compatible with almost all older wireless cards.

Registering your computer on the Residential Network:

Your computer must be registered before you can use the residential network. To begin the registration process, connect your computer to the network (wirelessly or wired) and open a browser window. You will see the page below. Enter your regular Pugetsound login information and click submit.

Authentication Page

After you have authenticated you should see a page like the one below, prompting you to download a small piece of software that checks for compliance with university policies. There is no way to use your computer on the residential network without downloading and running this program. The program can be uninstalled when you leave the residential network, though it must be reinstalled before you can reconnect. To download the software, click "Yes, I will install the Policy Key and accept the terms and conditions for Internet Use." You must download and run the program before you can continue.

Welcome to the Network Screen

The NAC will then scan your computer for compliance with our policies.

Please note that you must do the following or your computer will be denied network access until the problem has been resolved:

  • Install anti-virus software with on-access scanning and updated virus definitions
  • Enable Automatic Windows Updates. Simply being up to date on patches will not resolve the problem.
  • Clear any shared folders of MP3s and other music files

Users will be warned, but not denied access, in the following circumstances:

  • Anti-spyware software is not installed or not running
  • Music sharing programs are running

Still having problems registering?

You will be directed by the website on what you need to do to become compliant with network policies. If you still have trouble connecting call 253.879.8585 or you can find us in our office in the basement of the library in Room 028.
