Connecting to a Hub

A hub is necessary if you need to share one Ethernet jack with multiple computers. If you and your roommate wish to share a jack, or if you have multiple computers, you will need to connect through the hub in your room.

STEP 1: At minimum, four components are necessary for a successful connection through a hub: 1) the hub itself, 2) the power supply for the hub, 3) an Ethernet cable to connect the hub to the wall jack, 4) an Ethernet cable to connect the hub to your computer. ResNet provides items 1-3 free of charge, while the cable may be obtained at a computer store or at the University Bookstore.

STEP 2: Plug in the power supply to the hub, then plug the power supply into the electrical outlet in the wall. You must power the hub for it to work! At least one light should be lit on the face of the hub, signaling that it is powered.

STEP 3: Plug one end of the first ethernet cable into the Ethernet jack in the wall, and the other end into the hub, port labeled "Port 1 or 8", "Input", or "Uplink".

Some of our hubs have a button or switch located on the front of them. Set this to "Uplink" so that the connection light on the hub is lit or flickering.

STEP 4: Plug one end of the second Ethernet cable into your computer and the other end into a free port on the hub.

STEP 5: Repeat step 4 for all additional computers.
