Installing an Ethernet Cable

To connect to ResNet, you must use a Category 5 Ethernet Cable (Cat. 5/RJ45 cable) to link the Ethernet card to the wall outlet or hub. This is NOT a phone cord.  If you are not sure whether or not you have a correct cable, ask your roommate or RA, or call the OIS Help Desk at x8585. ResNet does not loan out cables, so if you need to purchase a cable, they are for sale at the University Bookstore.

STEP 1: Connect one end of the Category 5 Cable to the Ethernet card.

STEP 2: Connect the other end of the cable to the wall jack or hub. Make sure you plug it into the correct outlet. Ethernet connections differ from phone jacks! If you are unsure which is which, typically Ethernet jacks are wider, labeled "10/100BaseT" or "Data", and/or are colored orange.
